In recent months, the term “super flu” has gained attention in the Philippines after the health authorities confirmed cases of an influenza variant. Although the name sounds alarming, experts explain that this is not a new disease. It is a strain of influenza A (H3N2), similar to the seasonal flu experienced each year.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), this strain does not cause more severe illness than regular flu; however, it may spread more easily, especially during flu season. The DOH has also reported influenza cases, including this variant, but reassures the public that the situation remains under control. Most reported cases in the country have been mild, and patients have made a full recovery with proper care. Preventive measures, such as vaccination, proper hygiene, and early symptom management, remain the most effective ways to reduce complications.
Common symptoms of super flu are similar to those of seasonal influenza. These include:
Fever
Cough (usually dry)
Runny or stuffy nose
Body aches and fatigue
Headache
Sore throat

A sore throat is one of the most common and uncomfortable symptoms. It occurs when the influenza virus causes inflammation and irritation in the throat, which may worsen due to coughing and post-nasal drip.
When flu symptoms strike, comfort plays an important role in recovery. Essprin® is formulated to help soothe sore throat discomfort by calming irritation and easing throat pain. Its soothing action provides fast relief, making swallowing and speaking more comfortable while the body fights the infection.
Using throat-soothing products like Essprin®, alongside rest and hydration, can help improve daily comfort during flu recovery.
Some prevention tips to reduce the risk of flu infection and prevent the spread of the virus, health experts recommend:
Getting the annual flu vaccine
Washing hands frequently
Covering coughs and sneezes
Staying home when experiencing flu-like symptoms
Drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough rest
Although the term “super flu” may sound serious, health authorities confirm that it is similar to seasonal influenza and is manageable with proper care. Recognizing symptoms early, especially sore throat, and using soothing products like Essprin® can help provide comfort and support recovery during flu season.
